Algebra in the Real World
In the five years since California made a
algebra a high school graduation requirement,
more English-language learners than ever in
Sonoma County are talking the course earlier in
their academic careers. To bridge the
achievement gap, the Sonoma County Office of
Education and the Santa Rosa Chamber have
launched a pilot program that pairs incoming
freshmen with local engineers who can help
students better grasp algebraic concepts.
The chamber contributed about $18,000 to the
program and participating companies donated
staff time, space, supplies and meals for the
students.
